We are so excited to start blogging and to have visitors on our blog! This is a new experience for us! We are a group of 55 sixth grade students at a private Christian school nestled in the hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. We are all between 11- 13 years old and we come from many different backgrounds and neighboring towns. Many of us take buses to school. We want to know about you! Tell us at least one interesting thing about yourself!! Thank you!

What we have learned in class so far are the stages of a plot, like the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. The second week of school we made a story board of the summer book we read with summaries of the plot, setting, characters and conflict. For the next 2 weeks, we made a Keynote presentation about the story, The School Play. We had to make slides for all the stages of the plot and the elements of the story like we did on our poster boards.

This week in Language Arts 6 we took a test on what we learned in the first part of our language arts class and the story, Just Once. The student jobs were assigned one day as well, so there isn’t too much to write about yet. We also had block day on Thursday.

The first couple weeks of school were review and now we are starting to learn
new things.We are starting to get a lot of passwords and usernames for a lot of sites. For example, we have got passwords and usernames for so many sites and we have to document them or else we will forget them. The technology we use can be a little difficult at times, and we are still learning how to use it. We have started real PE, and I bet some of use are getting real fit! We have played flag football!

The summary of what we did this week is that we learned how to write properly. We also watched a video on the stages of a plot and did a Keynote presentation for The School Play. We learned about the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. WE also corrected a couple of sentences for our bell work. We wrote some things in our Think Tank. These are the things we did this week.

This project was a summer reading poster. We did this assignment to get a better understanding of the four story elements: Plot, Characters, Conflict and Setting. Everyone in 6th grade created one based on their favorite book or series. For example, Harry Potter is a very popular series. What book or series would you recommend reading?

The students of Mrs. Medina’s sixth grade class have experienced the new blogging world of St. Joseph’s Convent, Port of Spain. We enjoyed learning about their exciting posts!!

Wow! The school year has started and we have 55 new 6th graders who have joined the Mustangs!! These new students are clearly eager and ready to learn!! We have a lot to look forward to this year–but one thing I am SUPER excited about is the chance to have my students make global connections through Quad Blogging and through a Pen Pal Writing Exchange Program.  iPad integration, along with project based learning, should make this an exciting and memorable year for students! It’s an honor to teach at Monte Vista Christian, where we strive to make learning relevant, engaging and FUN!

What an incredible experience this was! Three colleagues and I traveled to Australia and New Zealand to share what we have learned about how to integrate the iPad and 21st Century teaching practices into our classrooms.  We met dedicated students and educators who made the experience that much more meaningful. Teaching kids how to learn, rather than teaching kids how to be taught, gives them skills that will advantage them far beyond the classroom!!

Mrs. Medina talked about the Global Communicator job and Pen Pal letters. Mrs. Medina talked about graphic Designing. Mrs. Medina talked about the Student Collaborator job And the collaborative book report. Nikki read aloud the poem that  three other students and her wrote about the beach. Mrs. Medina talked about the Founding Fathers report. Mrs. Medina talked about the Student Researcher job. Mrs. Medina talked about the eight parts of speech and the Newsletter class. Mrs. Medina talked about vocabulary words and spelling tests. Everybody worked on the poem summer.

Reflect back and share something you have truly learned this year. Something that made an impression in your mind that you will carry with you long after you finish 6th grade.
